Authored by  Naomy Namboarintsoa Ratsimandresy *, Abstract Objective:  The aim of this study was to determine the factors associated with the edentulousness of patients coming for consultation to the dental services in the city of Mahajanga Madagascar. Methodology: It was a case-control study. The cases were constituted by the individuals who came to the dental service for consultation with partial or total edentulousness, with or without dental prostheses while the controls were constituted by individuals who came to the dental service for consultation without missing teeth. The sample size was 210, including 105 cases and 105 controls (1 case for 1 control). The Odds Ratio (OR) was used to determine if the studied variables are factors associated with edentulousness and the 95% Confidence Interval (CI95%) was used to identify if the association between edentulousness and studied variables was statistically significant. Results:  Age (OR=3.2 and CI95%=1.3–7.5), to...

Iris Publishers - Online Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health | Single Tooth Implant Case in A Contraindicated Patient

Image
Authored by Nilesh R Parmar*. Introduction A male patient was referred to me regarding his UR1. The tooth had been root treated and post crowned after the patient suffered trauma over 10 years ago. Since it was done, the post crown would de-bond every few years, and the patient’s dentist would re-cement it. At his last visit, where the crown had come out, the patient’s dentist told him that the root had now appeared to have a fracture line and has a limited long-term lifespan (Figures 1a, 1b). The patient was then referred to me. For implant cases such as these, I have a 30-minute consultation appointment where we assess and take radiographs and photographs before moving into my consultation area to discuss the patient’s options. In this patient’s case, he was unhappy about having a loose front tooth. It was stopping him from confidently eating and affecting his social interactions. He also thought it might be affecting his work interactions, as he has had to go to work on o...

Iris Publishers - Online Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health| Bond Strength Between A Hard Chairside Reline and A Printed Denture Base Compared to A Conventional Heat Polymerized Denture Base: An In Vitro Study

Image
Authored by  Ghassan Al Dika *, Abstract Introduction:  The aim of this study was to test the shear and tensile bond strengths (MPa) of a hard chairside reline to a 3D printed denture base and compare it to a conventional heat polymerized denture base. Material and methods:  Sixty (n=15/test) blocks (70mm x 9mm x 9mm) of a printed polymethyl methacrylate (P-PMMA) (DENTCA 3D Printed Dentures) were provided by the manufacturer, while sixty (n=15 per test) blocks (70mm x 9mm x 9mm) of thermopolymerizable polymethyl methacrylate (T-PMMA) (Diamond D. Keystone) were prepared. Three millimeters of hard liner (Tokuso-Tokuyama America Inc.) was applied between two blocks. All the tests were conducted with an INSTRON Universal Testing machine. Results:  Statistically significant differences were found in the bond strength for the shear (p<0.003) and the tensile (p<0.0001) tests between the materials. In both instances, the bond strength of the hard li...

Iris Publishers - Online Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health| TMD Among Adolescents

Image
Authored by  Salwa Mekled*, Abstract The present study is to review TMD among adolescents. This review discusses several symptoms of Temporomandibular disorders, and the relation between psychological conditions and TMD among adolescents and young adults. The review points to the increase of TMD symptoms between young adults and the need for early evaluation, however more research is needed. Keywords:  Temporomandibular disorders; Adolescents; Pain Introduction Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of disorders that can affect temporomandibular joints (TMJ), masticatory muscles, or both [1]. Symptoms can include pain in the temporomandibular joint, periarticular area, or mastication muscles; clicking; and deviations or restrictions in normal range of movements [2]. Headaches can be a symptom of temporomandibular disorders. A study found a significant relationship between headache and the tones of mastication muscle during maximum clenching [3]. The prevalence of...
