Indicators of Dental Status as The Reference Test System the General Adaptation Syndrome

Introduction It is known that the idea of stress as a factor, which characterizes the manifestations of the general adaptation syndrome (GAS) of the organism, was formulated by the scientist Hans Selye in 1936 [1,2]. As a result of numerous studies, it was found that under the influence of stress (stress stimulants according to Hans Selye) as negative factors that threaten homeostasis, there is a mobilization response of organs and systems organism at all levels of its organization [3- 5]. The most extensive study of GAS conducted in respect of the cardiovascular system [6-8]. At the same time, objective data on the reference indicators characterizing the condition of the organs of the maxillofacial region in GAS at stressful loads in the world literature is extremely under-lit. This prevents the development and clinical application of medical technologies sanogenetically aimed at normalizing the state of maxillofacial region homeostasis when exposed various stressors-physical, chemica...

The Use of Raman Fluorescence Technology to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Remineralization of Solid Tooth Tissue

Introduction Tooth enamel is the most mineralized tissue of the body. Composition - 96 wt. % inorganic matter and 4 wt. % of organic matter and water. Inorganic the substance mainly consists of calcium phosphate associated with hydroxyapatite, the chemical formula of which is [Ca10 (PO4) 6 (OH) 2]. The presence of hydroxyapatite is confirmed by the presence of its spectral bands in the hard tissues of the tooth [1]. It is believed that Raman spectroscopy allows you to objectively evaluate spectral bands associated with specific chemical structures of tooth hard tissues [2,3]. So currently this technology can be considered preferable in the study of remineralization of teeth [4-10]. The purpose of our study is to determine the effectiveness of the Raman-fluorescent method of diagnosing the remineralization of hard tooth tissues using demineralizing pastes, gel, suspension and rinse aid. Communication Strategies for Reducing Patient Anxiety in Pedodontics Dentistry

Introduction This article will discuss the use of selected communication behaviors for reducing the level of anxiety experienced by child dental patients. The main areas to be covered are communication within dentistry, communication with children in the dental environment, and approaches for reducing anxiety experienced by child dental patients. Dentists comprise the second largest group of primary, directservice health practitioners in the country [1]. Little has been written on communication between dental professionals and their patients, in comparison with other primary health care areas. Dental communication is unique, in comparison with other health care areas, as there is a lack of urgency in everyday interactions. Dental care is rarely a matter of life and death [2]. A problem more prevalent in dentistry than in most of medicine is pain, or more specifically, the fear of pain. This reaction to dental work is partially one of fear of the unknown, which may include pain. This pr...

Regenerative Properties of a Manuka Honey Incorporated Membrane in a Porcine Model

Abstract The novel use of a Manuka honey incorporated dental membrane for tissue regeneration warrants investigation. In this study, we analyzed the use of the SweetBio Manuka honey incorporated membrane for epithelialization, bone maturation, or any adverse effects compared to Salvin Renovix (a clinically available product control) in a porcine model. Ridge preservation was performed with allograft plus experimental membrane with primary closure, experimental membrane without primary closure, control membrane, or neither. At 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, all dental defect sites were trimmed, embedded in methlymethacrylate (MMA), sectioned, stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and evaluated. Specifically, epithelialization, bone maturation, membrane remnants, healing, and inflammation were examined. Although the results demonstrated no significant differences between treatments groups, it was noticed that all sites were fully healed or nearly fully healed at 4 weeks and beyond. The re...

A Recommendation in The Treatment of Anterior Dental Crossbite Of A Single Tooth in The Early Mixed Dentition Period

Clinical Image Single tooth anterior dental crossbite can be esthtetic and functional worrisome problem for parents and also for children during the development stage. Various treatment options such as removable and fixed appliances have been suggested, therewithal force to the immature teeth is a controversial issue among physicians. This case presents a case of single tooth anterior dental crossbite corrected using the standard Catlan’s appliance (Lower Inclined Bite Plane) in two weeks without any damage to the tooth or the periodontium on the immature teeth and two year follow up until the completion of root development were presented. This fixed appliance is a simple and traditional method which does not depend on patient cooperation to reverse the bite. With the early correction of the anterior cross-closure, the development of class 1 occlusion is supported, the traumatic occlusion of the anterior teeth is eliminated, the maxillary growth pattern is ensured and the child’s self-...

Dissecting Subperiosteal Abscess After Surgical Removal of Mandibular Third Molar

Abstract Impacted Third molar surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery offices. Dissecting subperiosteal abscess, a certain type of subperiosteal infection after surgical removal of mandibular third molar, may occur several weeks after an apparently uneventful healing of a mandibular third molar wound. It can be managed and prevent further complication if diagnosed early and give proper treatment. Peer Reviewed Open Access Academic Journals Versus Conventional Paper Based Formats–What’s the Difference?

Editorial Congratulations to Iris Publishers on the release of the inaugural issue of the Online Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health. Open access research outputs have generated considerable discussion in recent years amongst the academic community due to the significant differences to conventional paper-based academic journals. Those in favor of the conventional formats argue that the paper-based journals have a greater tendency to be read, as hard (and soft) copies are regularly received by subscribers as well as libraries and academic institutions. Furthermore, they traditionally have higher impact factors as a result of these journals being around for several years and their regular base of subscribers. However, there are several limitations to the conventional paper-based format. First and foremost, their content is not as accessible as the open access formats. Requiring a subscription to the journal or a fee to view the individual articles limits the audience primarily to thos...

Oral Health and Public Health Systems in Europe

Opinion Oral health care in Europe is provided by a diverse range of services. In the Nordic countries children are eligible for public dental services, whereas adults and the majority of older people receive health care from private dental practitioners with national and local co-payment systems [1]. In southern Europe, private dental practitioners dominate, and third-party payment is based on private insurance or costs are paid by employers [2]. While in eastern Europe and central Asia, oral health services are based on a blend of public and private systems [3,4]. The current situation is like that the use of oral health services varies significantly by country. In all countries the poor and disadvantaged population group are underserved [5,6]. Price J et all in a retrospective observational study concluded that the socioeconomic status (SES) gradients indicate inequity in the orthodontic outcomes, with children from disadvantaged communities having poorer outcomes compared to their ...

Digital Smile Design, Guided Surgery, Delivering Facial Driven Implant Treatment in A Failed Dentition: Case Reports

Abstract The Digital Smile Design (DSD) digital implant treatment planning solutions allow for predictable prosthetic results, DSD helps in visualizing the end product through a blue print. The transition of patients from failing dentition to complete-arch implant rehabilitation often means that the patient is rendered edentulous and has to wear a removable complete denture for a period of time. Many patients find this unacceptable. With the immediate loading concept, it is possible to offer our patients a third dentition on the day of extractions. Today, many people suffering failed dentition, moving towards edentulism, getting back their smile with a fixed prosthesis could be priceless. This treatment provides a fixed interim prosthesis use throughout the rehabilitation process, allowing patient comfort and prosthodontic control. The prosthesis is supported by the immediate implants that we placed which are all on the same day. The implants and prostheses were functioning successfull...

Multiple Risk Factors of Candida Albicans Associated Denture Stomatitis

Abstract Background and Objectives:  Opportunistic oral fungal infections have spread, especially in denture wearers. Denture stomatitis (DS) is a common inflammatory reaction with multifactorial etiology. It is usually associated with Candida species, particularly Candida albicans, due to its high virulence, ability to adhere and form biofilms on oral cavity tissues and denture surfaces. This study highlights the risk factors of Candida albicans-associated denture stomatitis. The study was carried out at Prosthodontics Departments at the Faculty of Dentistry- Sana’a University, Sana’a city - Yemen. Study design:  The study group consisted of 288 denture wearers suffering from DS. Data including demographic data of the patients, clinical information, and risk factors of DS recorded in predesigned questionnaire. Result:  There was a significance association between male (OR=2.33, p< 0.001), older age patients (OR=6.8, p< 0.001), denture poor fitness (OR=8.2, p< 0....

Investigation of Maturation Failure in Revascularization

Abstract One of the major aims of revascularization therapy is to complete the physiological mechanism of the tooth. It is very difficult to regenerate the pulp which consists of a specialized tissue and maintain its durability especially in a previously infected area. The purpose of this review is to investigate the reasons for the uncompleted maturation stage in the regenerating pulp tissue. Influence of Shoulder and Chamfer Margin Design on the Stress Distribution Pattern in Different All Ceramic Restorations by Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

Abstract Purpose:  The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of shoulder and chamfer margin design on stress distribution pattern in different all ceramic restorations. Materials and methodology:  Six three-dimensional finite element models representing mandibular second premolar tooth were constructed, using a Finite Element Analysis Software (ANSYS version 14; ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). Three models each with shoulder and chamfer finish line were created after tooth preparation by reverse engineering, using Pro E software. Each model with shoulder finish line margin had Bruxzir (Glidewell labs), Lava (3M ESPEE) and IPS e.max Press (Ivoclar Vivadent) all ceramic restorations fabricated over them. Same was done with the models having chamfer finish margin. A distributed load of 600 N was applied on the restorations to analyze the stress distribution pattern in different all ceramic restorations having different marginal geometry. The stress distribution in...

Individual Preferences on Grading Systems in Dental Schools

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the type of grading system (pass/fail, pass/fail/pass with honors, traditional A-F grading) that individuals prefer in a sample of U.S. dental schools. Fifteen U.S. dental schools were selected, six of which used some type of pass/fail grading, the remainder used traditional grading and were randomly selected from a list of all U.S. dental schools. Six schools of the fifteen received the questionnaire which included demographic questions, questions on status as student or faculty, questions on current school grading system and individual preference for grading system types. Data was analyzed using an ANOVA with post hoc analysis using the Bonferroni method. Faculty significantly strongly disagree with pass/fail grading as compared to students (p=0.001, CI 3.07-3.70). Additionally dental school faculty were more likely to disagree with the pass/fail/pass with honors grading system than first and second year dental students (p=0.001, ...

A Simplified Approach to Rehabilitation of Swallowing: Labiotherapy

Functional rehabilitation is now part of the treatment of dysmorphoses requiring orthodontic treatment.. But it is actually all practitioners who should be concerned with acquiring a myofunctional balance in the oral zone. Joint prostheses, implants, complete prostheses, periodontal health all these daily acts absorb muscle forces generated by oral praxies. Abandoned during the initial training, these functional rehabilitation procedures, which are time-consuming and maltreated by the nomenclature, are insufficiently integrated into the daily practice of general practitioners. The contribution of functional educators [1] to wear all night in addition to a series of exercises, has allowed the gradual integration of this approach in the treatment plans for complete rehabilitation of the masticatory system, without the need the help of speech therapists also facing the difficulty of re-education of swallowing. Whereas the transition from sucking swallowing to swallowing of the subject typ...
